Dear Fishing Friends:
Everyone will be very happy when this winter is over. It's been a rough one!
With all the snow we have had, access is difficult to the rivers. A few hardy fisherman had to use snow-shoes. All access to our drift boat launch and take-out roads are blocked with lots of snow but we will have them cleared by March 15. Some folks I know have resorted to ice fishing on local lakes.
Countdown to when we can start guiding on the Kalum River March 15 has begun with 29 days to go. We run only three drift boats on the upper section and so far we are booked March 19-20-21 and April 2-3-4, 1999. As you can see, we still have a few "new" dates open, so if you are interested in coming out please let me know your dates as soon as possible. The best Steelheading should last until the end of April or until the water rises.
When the water rises we lose a few good Steelhead pools. Down from 27 to 10. The higher water should bring in fresh early runs of Chinook Salmon and for a time you have a chance to hook both Steelhead and Chinook on the same day.
- Getting Here...
- For low and more convenient airfares, make sure you use the TFN Travel Agency, or call (Toll Free) 1-877-GO CATCH .
- Current Weather...
- We had a record snowfall Thursday. Friday turned to rain. It has been very nice over the last couple of days with highs to +7 and lows of -2 degrees Celsius. The TFN Weather Center provides current conditions and three day forecasts for the surrounding area.
- Water conditions...
- Conditions on all rivers are excellent!
- Copper River (Zymoetz)...
- This river is in good shape. The upper part of the river is closed to angling to protect wintering over Steelhead. The lower end allows angling and the fishing there has been very good!
- Kalum River...
- The Kalum is is in GREAT shape but access to many pools are difficult. The few pools that we have been able to access have often held Steelhead. Since the water is low a person can wade across to the other side to different pools.
- Kitimat River...
- There's not much happening this time of year.
- Nass River and tributaries...
- There's not much happening this time of year.
- Skeena River...
- The Skeena is currently frozen over.
- Ocean Fishing...
- We also guide for Salmon, Halibut, bottom fish and Crab out of Prince Rupert. What is available and when are shown in fishing report:
