When everything seems dead, put on red!
by Leigh Ann Davis, Lake Jacksonville, Texas
met my fiancé, Jason, in July of 1997 and he introduced me to the very exciting and addicting sport of bass fishing; and I definitely am addicted. My favorite bass catchers are Carolina rigs, Rat-L-Traps, spinnerbaits, castaic, the Lil' Fishie, and anything red. Red because anytime I don't seem to be getting any bites I usually put on a Zoom tomato-seed finesse worm and have always had success.
I always read Jason's bass fishing mags and am constantly bringing up different info I get from them with his friends. And of course they constantly make fun of me and give me a hard time about this. Especially about my favorite saying, which is "When everything seems dead, put on red!"
This morning we went to Martin Creek in Tatum, Texas, which is a power plant lake, to pre-fish for an upcoming "The 2 Of Us" tournament at the end of January. Jason, Steve, a friend from out of town and myself went on this fishing trip. The weather was slightly chilly and very cloudy. We fished about 30 minutes, amidst wind and occasional rain, without so much as a nibble.
I had been using a orange/black striped Rat-L-Trap and a flourescent yellow spinnerbait with no luck. I then switched to a Carolina rig with a red tomato-seed finesse worm.
Almost immediately I caught the first bass of the day. However, it soon began to really rain. The guys decided to call it a day with me having caught the only bass. They also had to put up with a 45 mile trip home while listening to little remarks about me catching the only fish of the day and my favorite saying.
I know they will continue to poke fun at me, but generally each time we now go fishing, everyone tries something red before calling it a day. And everything is right in the world again until they forget about me catching the only fish and I have to teach them a lesson, again, and again, and again.
My Tip: "When everything seems dead, put on red!"
Thanks
