After that comes top water stuff, spoons, odds and ends and, oh yes, what potatos are to the Irish, Erie Dearies or weight forward spinners are to the Walleye fishermen. I have a dozen or so of these; different sizes, colours and shapes. A friend of mine who runs a charter boat goes through around fifteen dozen of these every year, but they were primarily responsible for pulling out some 2500 fish last year, alone! The next drawer is filled with really deep, and big baits that go down 25-30 feet plus, which are used for anything from Walleye to Muskie to Pike to Salmon. The other box holds all of my Steelhead and Salmon gear, such as flutter spoons, different crankbaits, floats and roe tying equipment. Some tackle will be exchanged from box to box as the seasons go by, but most of the tackle generally stays in its original place. Mind you, decisions can be difficult to make when going to areas that have a real mixture of fish. Its then time to clear off the kitchen table, bring out all the boxes and try to figure out what's going to be taken, and what is staying home. The worst feeling possible is getting up to your favourite spot, only to find the fish are biting on a moss green Rapala and you don't have any with you; but you've got half a dozen in different sizes several hundred miles away. Then its off to the bait store, and the frantic search beginsfor that moss green Rapala, of which you already have six, but they're at home! **Please note... If you have a tackle box with drawers, and they stick a little, never, ever spray silicone on the sliders. Take it from me. I picked up my lures from the bottom of the boat several times last year, before scrubbing what I could of the silicone off -- and that still didn't help. You'll save yourself some big headaches if you just leave them alone. |
