WEED LINES

Much like rock piles, weed lines act like a magnet for crappies through the summer months. Weeds are home to a host of aquatic bugs, as well as small to large minnows, all of which attract crappies. Up here in out northern lakes, weeds will grow from four to twenty feet, depending on the water clarity. Cheque the lake you intend to fish for the maximum weed depths.

Some of the best locations to check first is shore lines , shore line drop offs, humps, and under water islands. The key factor with weed growth is sun penetration, as it relates to this structures.

I personally find weed lines adjacent to deeper water to be one of the best locations for location crappies. I have also found the larger crappies will relate to the deeper weed lines ( the maximum for the particular lake you are fishing), and the smaller crappies tend to migrate to the shallower weeds. This can be better observed when checking out shallower inlets, bays and channels. But don't be fooled, monster crappies can move in to this areas, depending on the forage and time of year.

Another observation I have noted is the light intensity. As much of my summer time fishing is done in the early morning (now and then), but particularly in the evening. Crappies are much like walleyes in as much as the take advantage of low light conditions. You will find them moving into shallow water weeds earlier in the evening under over cast conditions.
