ROCK PILESSmaller rock piles can offer better crappie fishing then larger piles, because the smaller rock piles can concentrate crappies better, making your fishing action faster. On the larger rock piles you will find the crappies will be dispersed more widely, thus making you search for smaller schools of individual fish over a larger area.
Summer is the time of the year when you should be able to locate the large crappies. You'll find them hanging out around deep rock piles and deep weed lines. Also keep in mind that crappies will still make migrations up rivers, canals, harbors, and shallow weedy areas in search of prey during low light conditions. This movement may be for only an hour or two, so keep checking until your locate them and make notes of the time of day and the weather conditions.
One other hot location you will want to check out this time of year is river mouths. After a healthy rain fall you will see lots of debris being washed down stream, containing plenty of insects that have been washed out of trees, river banks, and surrounding lands, all of which settle at the rivers mouth. Crappies will congregate here to feast on the offerings within 12-24 hours of the rainfall. Check it out!
