Requirements

Smallies require a water temperature of 60° F. (15° C) plus for at least part of the year. The ideal comfort range is somewhere between this temperature and 80° F. (27° C) depending on a variety of factors, including water clarity, dissolved oxygen levels, and forage. Scientific literature lists 95° F. (35° C) as the fatal temperature for smallmouths, however, the fish's lower tolerance as opposed to the largemouth's for turbid water and low oxygen levels means it usually vacates shallow areas for other reasons, before temperatures drive it out.

In addition, smallmouths need an quatic environment that provides the proper conditions for feeding and propagating. Areas with rocky and weedy bottoms are ideal for cover and an abundant supply of baitfish.
