HabitatWhile most white suckers frequent water depths up to 20 or 30 feet, some can be found as deep as 60 feet or more. Predominantly bottom feeders, they scavenge for food throughout most of North America, from the Mackenzie River west to Labrador in Canada and south to the Gulf States and Mexico. They spend most of their time on the bottom of the clear, shallow areas of small to large lakes and streams. They need an environment that offers vegetation and insects, their primary food source. Consequently, they compete with preferred game fish such as trout and bass. |
