The last tournament of the year for me was the fall challenge on Lakes Couchiching and Simcoe. It was our best tournament of the year. The first day of the tournament we had to fish Lake Couchiching because the weather and wind were just too bad to get to the Small Mouth that we located on Simcoe during practice. We tried to get to them but couldn't because of the 3 to 4 foot waves that we had to contend with. The run would have taken us well over an hour and the fish that we had going were out in unprotected open water which would have made keeping in contact with the jig and retaining boat position on the break just about impossible. We reverted to fishing the exact same water that I had fished two weeks earlier in the Classic, hoping that there would still be some fish there for us to at least stay in the hunt after day one. We wound up weighing in a respectable 17 lb. of Large Mouth Bass and were only 4 lb. out of the lead after day one. The morning of day two rolled around and the wind and rain were still heavy, but not as bad as day one. We decided that if we stood a chance at winning this event we would have to make the run and fish our Small Mouth on Lake Simcoe. I believed that we could still catch a limit of fish off of the same spot as the day before but it wouldn't be enough to win. The rest is history, so to speak, and one of those days that I'll never forget for as long as I live. We wound up weighing in 26.73 lb. of Small Mouth to not only win the tournament, but set an Ontario record for the most weight weighed in on a single day for 6 Bass. That ended the tournament season for us, but I still managed to get out a couple of more times for those Lake Simcoe Small Mouth and believe me the fishing was nothing short of fantastic. I've received numerous calls since then from clients that want to get out and experience that awesome fishery but I haven't made any commitments as of yet. I still don't know if I want to share it or have it to myself for a little while longer. All the best and good fishing in 1997.
