Question #2: from Barry in Oakville, Ontario When you're fishing for fall steelhead, do you have a preference for a particular type of spawn, or do you think it really matters at all?

Answer #2: I don't know whether it is a confidence factor or not but I believe the type of spawn does make a difference and, given the opportunity, I'd rather fish brown trout spawn than any other roe.

In the fall, salmon and brown trout are the predominant spawners, along with the occasional fall rainbow, making either salmon or brown trout roe in my opinion the better offerings. Sort of like matching the hatch when fly fishing.

However, I do prefer brown trout eggs over salmon eggs because I believe they have a scent that is different from anything else and, because of their size, I can tie up much smaller spawn sacs for a much more natural presentation when faced with clear fall water.
