Question #2 (Which always seems to follow answer #1): If I spend the money on the super lines, does that also mean that I have to buy the matching super rods and reels with the special guides designed for the super line?

Answer #2: Answer: The super braided lines have minimal line stretch capabilities which in turn gives the angler an immense hook setting power . The problem with this advantage is that the shock of the hook set has to be absorbed somewhere, and with no stretch in the line, that somewhere is usually the rod. When super braided line first appeared on the market, a number of rods began to get broken simply because they were not designed to absorb the shock of no stretch line hook sets. Some rod and reel companies began to produce stiffer, beefier specialty rods for use with super lines. these companies began to market the rods with special rod blanks and guides to combat the pounding super braided line put rods through. Of course special reels followed because what is a special rod without a special reel?

I can only offer my own experience here. I have been using braided lines for fifteen or twenty years when fishing for muskie and heavy cover fish, and have broken very few rods in that time. However I also use rods that are designed for muskie and heavy cover -- always the right tool for the job. I have never had to replace a guide because of line damage, or had a reel damaged by line. I would recommend using your existing heavy action rod for super lines. it should be able to withstand the punishment of the super lines.

However, if a new rod and reel for super line is on your shopping list, then take a look at the specialty rods and decide for yourself.
