Boat positioning can also make a difference on sunny days. Smallmouth bass don't like to sit in the light, and instead wait in the shadows to ambush their prey. So the best way to approach them is to face into the sun and make your cast into a sunny area; then slowly work the lure back into a shady part. This way you won't spook the fish by casting right on top of them and it gives them a chance to see your bait coming. One of my favourite places to work a lure is right on the edge where sun and shade meet. Many times you can actually see the fish swim out from the dark areas to meet -- and eat -- your presentation. Polarized sunglasses are a huge bonus here -- they cut the glare off the water and help you see what's light and dark down below. And when you see do see fish in shallower water, make sure you don't throw your moving shaddow across them or they're likely to lose their appetite.
