Jigging Area
Let the spoon fall to the bottom. Then, in a quick motion, snap your wrist up between 15 and 20 degrees, enough to raise it 3-4 feet, and then let the bait settle again. Wait for between 10 and 20 seconds and then repeat the procedure. When the bait is falling, try to maintain contact with it, but don't keep the line to tight. If you do, you will be removing the fluttering action from the spoon.

When your quarry takes the bait, it will feel like a slight "tick" on the line. Set the hook immediately. And to maximize your hooking percentage, use some sort of scent on the spoon. If you want to use a trailer, use a small plastic grub -- perhaps to imitate a tail. Using larger trailers may spook the bass.

As with other forms of jigging, use a fast action rod and pare down your line size. Although you might think that heavier line has the redeeming value of enabling you to break through snags, if you snag the spoon on rocks or wood, it is unlikely that you'll get the spoon back, even if you're using wire. And, after all, in slow presentation situations, lighter line is less likely to be perceived by the fish. In most southern situations, where the bass grow bigger, 12-14lb should handle the job. In the northern US and Canada, I've been successful with 8lb test.

So try spooning in some bass this month!
