Live Bait

Figure 3.5While artificial baits are fun and challenging to use when fishing for "ol' marble eyes," finicky walleye will fall for live bait many more times than it will for a plain artificial. This means tipping a jig with some live bait or using one of the most effective presentations for open-water walleyes: live bait rigs. These rigs allow a slow, natural presentation of a form of live bait in deep open-water areas. The basic rig consists of a walking bottom sinker, a swivel, and a snell or leader. The sinker has a hole in it that allows it to slide down your line, stopping at the swivel. The snell, attached to the swivel, now drifting behind the sinker, carries a live minnow, leech, or night crawler hooked through the mouth or nose. A walleye striking the bait is allowed to take line being fed through the sliding sinker, without feeling any unnatural weight. Many varieties of this rig exist, including flicker snells and floating jig heads for suspended fish or those off the bottom.
