The pH Factor

Figure 1.2 Without doubt, acid rain is one of he most serious problems facing our fishery resources. However, an understanding of the subtleties of pH and how it affects fish can actually improve your angling success.

The system for measuring the level of acidity in a liquid on a scale of 0 to 14 is referred to as pH. Seven is the midpoint or the pH of distilled water. Each species has a slightly different preferred pH level and all fish Prefer slightly alkaline environments. When water is not at the desired pH level, fish will become hard to catch. But fish will virtually avoid water that has a level of acidity drastically different from the preferred level.
