Line

Fishing line is the only link between you and that trophy. Your choice of line influences your ability to hook fish, play them, land them, and release them in a healthy state. It is as important to match your line to your terminal tackle as it is to match it to the fish you intend to catch. In fact, terminal tackle, line, rod, and reel must be thought of as an integrated system -- your choice of one piece always influencing your choice of the others.

Fishing line is often rated by pound-test. This rating refers to the amount of steady strain a line can withstand. In other words it takes at least eight pounds of steady pressure to snap an eight-pound-test line. Other properties which affect our line choice include strength when knotted, ability to withstand shock, limpness, elasticity, diameter, and resistance to abrasion. Line choice is a matter of identifying the most important factors in a particular angling situation and choosing the line material and weight best suited to your needs.
