What sort of tackle should I use?

The lightest possible. 4 or 6 lb Berkley Trimax would be my choice. You've got to remember that with all that ice, there is no wind to stir up the lake. Therefore the water is gin clear. The smaller the diameter of line you use, the less chance of spooking a fish. That goes for hooks as well. I prefer using a wide gap Gamakatsu hook, similar to the ones I use for steelheading, either a #12, or #14. They are made from fine wire, aren't heavy (which will allow your minnow to swim more freely and stay alive longer) and are needle sharp. For this type of live bait fishing, I normally hook an emerald shiner just under the dorsal fin.

I use a Shimano Stradic 4000 and a Shimano ultra light ice fishing rod when angling for specs or lakers through the ice. I prefer the larger front drag reel because of the way the line lays and comes off of the reel under these frigid conditions.

And remember, if you're planning on an outing or two this winter, don't forget to dress accordingly. Dress in layers. It's a lot easier to take off a sweater or two than to stand there and freeze all day long. Also, if you plan to try to get back into one of these remote lakes, make sure you travel in pairs in case a snowmobile breaks down. And let someone know exactly where you are heading and when to expect you home!
