SEASONAL CHANGESIn the latter part of May males begin to make the nest or redd on a gravel bottom, clearing the debris from an area about one foot across. The clearing usually attracts a female who may deposit several thousand eggs to be fertilized. The males guard the nest from predators and egg snatchers until the young are free-swimming. This activity may continue into July.
During summer and fall there are almost always some pumpkinseeds in shallow shoreline weeds and wood. However, it is the deeper weedbeds and brush piles which often harbor the big fish during these seasons.
