TECHNIQUE

Technique is the final step, the physical act of putting it all together. The result, we hope, will be fish in the boat. As technique is largely a practical exercise, a mythical fishing trip to Lake X can serve to illustrate the practical steps to catching any fish.

Homework

We gather all possible information from the appropriate government agencies, local anglers, and any other possible source. We should be able to obtain data concerning the fish com-munity, predator/prey relationship, traditional angling methods, habitat, and pressures on the environment.

Most important, we have obtained a lake map showing the structural details. On this map we mark our initial game plan how and where we intend to fish.

Observation and Re-evaluation

From the time we first see the lake until we take our last cast or reel in our trolling lines, we are constantly reevaluating our initial game plan and making changes to it. We may make changes even before we leave the dock. Perhaps the water is dirtier than we expected or perhaps a strong wind is influencing fish behavior or making chosen areas tough to fish.
