Rods Fishing rods are designed to do specific jobs. They work best when used with specific weights of lures and certain types of line and reels. We must also consider rod length and, most important, rod action in each angling situation. The action of a rod describes its dynamic response to load and force. A rod which bends equally from butt to tip in a gently sweeping arc is described as having sloppy or para-bolic action. A rod which bends very little has stiff or pool cue action. Most rods fall somewhere in the middle. General purpose rods tend to combine a stiffer butt section with a sloppy or fast tip section. The relationship between these sections is referred to as the taper of the rod.
